Erik Morales grew up in the coastal town of Cuyutlán on the on the Pacific coastal side of Mexico. 

Situated nine hours west of Mexico City, Erik still lives and works in his family’s seaside restaurant business. Annual trips to Los Angeles have helped Erik to more freely express his identity and gender. Unfortunately, the trips to the U.S. are brief and bittersweet, serving as a reminder of what is waiting for Erik back at home in Mexico and the familial expectations around his gender expression.

In this interview, Erik is joined by his mother Maria, as they both share the ongoing process of coming to terms with Erik’s sexuality and gender identity.
